My mom is also a private pay resident and we are just paying down her life savings until she qualifies for Medicaid.  Unfortunately she did not do any estate planning or have long term care insurance.  Their will most likely be nothing left for her heirs.

There is no clear intended, desirable answer present within this question. If your parent goes to a nursing home, then try to visit them often, don't abandon them, if they are a good parent. Also, make sure that they are not mistreated, because nursing homes are known grounds for public misconduct.

Remaining alert for signs of physical or sexual abuse like unexplained accidents, broken bones, cuts, lacerations, and bruises - particularly around the breasts, upper abdomen, or inner thighs (as they are indicators of sexual abuse and should be addressed as quickly as possible) is necessary to protect and ensure the safety of the residents of an elder care facility.
