As I mentioned in a previous post we are paying for my mom's nursing home care since she does not qualify for Medicaid.  Her social security payment covers about half of her monthly expenses so we are required to pay the rest.  Is anyone else in this situation?  What are your thoughts on the government paying more for people so they don't have to spend their life savings on long term care?

I don't think there should be anymore entitlement programs. I think that people should buy Long Term Care insurance if they are worried about financial implications of nursing home care.  LTC insurance doesn't make sense for everyone but it sounds like your family may have been able to use it since you have to much to ask the nursing home to forego more than social security and not so much that you are worried she will go through life savings. You should consider investing the money.

Why not try to hire a private nurse, my friend's father hired a direct private nurse from philippines and he said it is much cheaper than to hire here.. most of licensed nurse from philippines are very good.

That's a good idea.  I know that home health care in the US can be really expensive.

Findin what help you are entitled to from the Government is not clear or easy to find out.  The rules seem to be different everytime you look into it.  I know other people are in the same boat but I highly recomend you have a look at the advice pages on a website I found called Compare Care Homes:

Physical and sexual abuse should be brought to the attention of both the department of your state responsible for the regulation of elder care facilities as well as the local police.
